This post is to share what I found. This afternoon I needed an inductor of 40 - 45 uH @ 5A, 10A peak no saturetion. I didn't have one, but.did. have a 1.4 mH 5A rated one. So just a matter of old winding of, and a new on.In the picture Organdmoddual.jpg you see the original on the left. On the right a modified one with 2 windings of 25.75 turns in parallel. Before I soldered these two windings together, I checked them with an inductance-meter (yeah, my Elmcie-device): one turned out to be 42.0 uH, and the second 42.3 uH.

When I parallelled them, the result was. At that moment I understood what was causing the heatup on the colored one (threecolored40uH.jpg).

I used that in a SMPS, and it ran hot despite 3.0.7mm winding (which should be sufficient)It turns out that mur varies depending on where you are on (or is it in?? ) the toroid core. And that results in slight different inductances for the two windings in the dual, and the three windings in the colored one.I removed all the windings from the dual, and rewound with 1.5mm² (Dutch freaks will recognize it as 'schakeldraad voor huisinstallaties, NEN1010)Where would I be without Elmcie??Nard Attachment(s).

Yes, inductors hold many secrets. The dual-winding-thing was an-easy-as-can-be-done: I removed the upper layer, and when there was just the bottom-layer left, I counted the remaining turns. Split it in half, and thought that it would work out: but in spite of Elmcie's shortcomings, it did show the slight difference between the 2 windings. And parallelling these two resulted in 36 uH instead of the 42uH I expected. You mentioned the twisting in Rain's thread, and (of course!!) I had that in mind when I made the first, the colored one: I have a big roll of that three-color-wire, it's twisted already, so I thought it would work out OK. But it didn't. As you can see on the picture, I had to cram the last few turns into the toroid: I think that there the uniformity between the three windings was compromised. Why didn't I use decent enamel-wire???

Because I have none, and it's hard to find these days. My species, making their own inductors, is fading out.:lol:The reason I posted is that we used a toroid-core in Rain's thread from a common-mode-choke: and it's tempting to parallel the windings, if that's needed, current-wise. And as I found the hard way: that's no good practice.Oh well, the SMPS is quite happy with Blackie.CheersNard.
